01/08/2012 Day 2 Paleo Challenge
I woke up again with Sugar Withdrawal; my eyes looked like I had been not only getting shit faced all night, but not sleeping. It took me a good two hours just to wake up, in the interest of staying hydrated I had planned not to drink any coffee, but I felt so shitty I needed some stimuli to get me going, it was my crutch for sugar today. An Iced Americano don’t taste as good with nothing in it, it’s like drinking black tar.
I wasn’t productive until about 11:00 AM, my mind just couldn’t get started. As the day progressed I started to feel better, but it was clear to me that I had inadvertently been hooked on sugar. All the analysis of other shit, and such a small detail which had been a part of my progress from Malibu was keeping me hooked to dextrose.
For the most part I feel my first day of eating Paleo went well, except there was some apple slices, and nuts in my lunch time Catalyst Meal, I think if I had to do it over again I would have taken it out. In order to be strict I’m going to take out nuts and fruit when they are in my pre-packed meals.
You can read my entire food log here…
The WoD today was one that was on my mind all day long, as it involved my favorite pastime running. I can think of three things I would prefer to do than running, 1-having my balls squeezed in a vice, 2-watching the entire Twilight Series from Start to Finish, 3-Watching the Broncos Play the next playoff game in the State of Colorado, all three of which are about as pleasant as listening to Sarah Palin wax philosophical about anything that doesn’t involve tanning beds, beauty pageants, or lipstick brands. In case you haven’t figured it out, I don’t like to run.
The WoD involved doing a 1 mile run or row, 5 rounds of 15 hand release push-ups, 25 kettle bell swings at 53 lbs, and 35 double unders, then another 800 meter run or row. I scaled the double unders to single unders, but everything else I did as prescribed. I chose to do the 1 mile run, and row 800 meters.
Alison coached this evening, and said we would have 35 minutes to complete the WoD, I figured if I could finish under 30 it would be a good time. I started the WoD doing the 1 mile run, the first 400 meters I felt good, and at the halfway point I started to feel like shit, during the 3rd 400 meters I really wanted to say fuck this running business. When I reached the turnaround point, I started to push hard, trying to just keep up with the person in front of me, I started to accelerate going uphill, when I reached the top of the hill, my legs told me it was time for a nap. I tried to dig deep to sprint the last 200 meters, but my gas tank was low.
When I ran into the gym, I was surprised to find that finished my mile in 8:16. This is a good time for me, considering I thought it would take me 10 minutes. I jogged to where all my gear was, and started to do the hand release push-ups. The work from yesterday was catching up to me on the first round. As I progressed to the Kettle bell swings I knew that I would have to just set a good tempo, and continue to move using that tempo.
I was surprised how quickly I was able to finish the five rounds, at about 22+ minutes I jumped on the rower, and got it ready for the 800 meters. I pushed hard in the beginning, but lost my pace in the middle 250 meters. Alison came over to encourage me, and helped me finish the last 200 meters, her encouragement was crucial in my ability to push at the end; I finished in 26:04.
I felt fucking awesome. Like a fucking rockstar, this WoD was gnawing at me from 8:30 PM the night before and I had conquered it.
Small victories over time amount to big results.
Fucking, fuck yeah.
A good day 2, on scale of 1 to 10 in terms of Paleo I give myself an 8, I should have skipped the fruit and nuts in the Catalyst Meal, and maybe eat one less egg. Overall a good start…
